why grass-finished beef matters
For more than 20 years, our family has been raising cattle the way nature intended: on grass, in open pastures, and with care for the land. At Hedgeapple Farm, we focus on cattle that thrive on grass, producing beef that’s flavorful, nutrient-rich, and raised sustainably. Our approach isn’t just about the meat — it’s about building healthy soil, supporting the ecosystem, and keeping our farming practices rooted in tradition and responsibility.
Why Grass-Finished Matters
Many cattle operations feed grain at some point in their production, but not us. At Hedgeapple Farm, our cattle stay on pasture and eat grass for their entire lives, supporting their health, producing flavorful beef, and promoting regenerative practices that build soil and preserve ecosystems.
Grass-Fed vs. Grain-Finished
You may hear terms like “grass-fed,” “grain-finished,” or “organic” tossed around—and it can get confusing. Here’s a simple breakdown:
Grass-Fed / Grass-Finished:
Animals eat only grass throughout their lives. This is what we do at Hedgeapple Farm.
Grain-Finished:
Cattle are considered grain-finished when they are fed grains, usually in the last few months of their lives, to fatten them before processing.
Organic:
This label refers to feed and farming practices that meet USDA organic standards. At Hedgeapple Farm, we go above and beyond those standards: prioritizing natural, sustainable, and regenerative practices that focus on animal welfare, soil health, and the environment. Labels don’t always tell the whole story, which is why we encourage you to know your farmer.
Our philosophy? Transparency over labels. The only way to truly know your food is to know your farmer. Ask questions, visit the farm if you can, and learn exactly how your beef is raised.
Vote with Your Dollar
Choosing local, responsibly raised meat isn’t just a meal — it’s a decision that supports families, communities, and the health of our planet. Every purchase is a vote for better farming practices and a more sustainable food system.
We’re proud to share our family’s work with you and hope every bite of our grass-finished beef tells the story of care, dedication, and connection to the land.
